I love the deep and restorative rest and recovery that comes being placed in a meditative state that comes from a sound bath. How sound is digested by the mind is the same why the body metabolises vitamin C. Take large amounts wont hurt or harm the body and what you don't use, the body pisses it out. Apologies for my vulgar reference. Curd information hits the brain differently and is something you wont forget easily. So if you want to remember something, the dirtier the better.
I love what I f'ing do. This month I am shifting into the need and love that I have for sound baths. This journal is about what they are, what tools I use and how you can enhance your experience with me.
So lets start with my instruments and how they are used in my sessions.
Singing bowls
Singing bowls have a profound effect on both the mind and body, engaging the nervous system in a unique and transformative way. When struck or played, the bowl emits a resonant, harmonic sound that creates an external mantra, a soothing auditory anchor that gently draws our attention inward. This sound envelops the listener, quieting mental turbulence and fostering a deep state of calm.
At a physiological level, the vibrations produced by the singing bowl resonate through the body, acting as a tuning fork for our cells. This resonance encourages coherence, aligning the body's rhythms and calming the nervous system. As the mind attunes to these vibrations, the sympathetic nervous system—the body’s “fight-or-flight” response—begins to decelerate, shifting to a more balanced state that allows for relaxation and healing.
In this harmonious state, the mind and body reconnect and re-calibrate. Stress dissolves, and a sense of centeredness arises, inviting the potential for profound inner transformation. In essence, singing bowls act as a bridge to coherence, guiding us from a place of imbalance to one of resonance, where we can truly experience the “magic” of mind-body unity.
The singing bowls used in your session are tone specific and are made from brass or crystals.
Koshi Wind Chimes:
Koshi chimes are delicate, hand-crafted musical instruments with eight precisely tuned notes suspended inside a resonant bamboo cylinder. Each note is carefully tuned to create a clear and harmonious play of tones, rich in complex overtones. As the chime is gently moved or struck, these overtones interact in a unique way: the shorter chords’ overtones gradually rise in prominence, subtly transforming into fundamental tones. This creates a fluid, circular soundscape that feels both grounding and ethereal, as if the music is continuously evolving. The result is a captivating auditory experience that resonates deeply, inviting a sense of calm and a gentle presence.
Koshi chimes have a unique and enchanting role in a sound bath, offering a soft yet powerful resonance that guides the mind into a calm, meditative state. When the chimes are gently played, they create a continuous, looping scale that feels both familiar and mesmerizing, drawing listeners into a peaceful, rhythmic flow. The tones of the Koshi chimes, with their delicate overtones and harmonics, seem to wash over the body, subtly grounding and centering the mind.
At the beginning of a sound bath, the Koshi chimes can serve as a gentle invitation to let go, allowing the mind to settle and the body to release tension. As the session progresses, the chimes help maintain a tranquil atmosphere, supporting deep relaxation and inward reflection. Toward the end of the sound bath, they’re often used to bring participants gently back to awareness, reconnecting them with their bodies and the present moment. In this way, Koshi chimes act as a guide, leading us on a journey inward and, when it’s time, softly guiding us back.
Shruti Box:
A shruti box is a traditional musical instrument from India, known for its simple yet powerful ability to create a continuous drone. Working on a system of bellows, the shruti box is similar in structure to a harmonium but lacks keys, producing sustained notes that serve as a tonal foundation. This drone, or “shruti,” enriches the soundscape and supports musicians during practice or performance, especially in Indian classical music.
Often used alongside instruments that are used in sound baths or as an accompaniment in singing, the shruti box creates a steady, resonant base that deepens the harmonic texture. Its rich, unwavering tones help artists maintain pitch while enhancing the meditative quality of their music, bringing warmth and stability to the performance.
How to best be prepared.
A sound bath can be a transformative journey, one that invites you into a space of deep relaxation and self-connection. To make the most of this experience, a few simple steps can help you immerse fully and feel the benefits resonating long after the session ends.
Have an Open Mind: Enter the session with a sense of curiosity and openness. Sound baths are a unique experience, and each one can be different. Embrace the opportunity to explore without judgment or expectation, and let yourself be pleasantly surprised by where the sounds take you.
Get Comfortable: Comfort is key to a successful sound bath. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that lets you relax without any restrictions. Everything is provided to prioritise your comfort. There are extra blankets, bolsters and pillows. The more at ease your body is in the physical plane, the easier it will be for your mind to relax as well.
Listen Without Reaction: As the sounds begin to flow, simply allow yourself to listen. Let go of any urge to analyze or respond to what you’re hearing. Each tone, each vibration, is there to be experienced rather than understood. When you listen openly, you allow the sounds to wash over you, creating space for healing and inner peace.
Set an Intention: Consider setting a gentle intention for your sound bath. This is something we will complete together prior to our session. Whether it’s relaxation, clarity, or letting go of stress, this intention can serve as a quiet guide, allowing the sounds to support you in a meaningful way. It is also an anchor that ground you as your immerse yourself in the music.
Focus on Your Breath: Your breath can be a powerful anchor during the session. When your mind starts to wander, gently bring your awareness back to your breath. Let it be slow and steady, syncing with the sounds around you. This focus can deepen your experience, helping you to stay present. There will be a grounding exercise we will use to drop you into a deeper state of conciseness.
With an open heart and a willingness to let go, your sound bath can be a beautifully restorative experience, a moment of pause and renewal. Embrace it fully, and allow yourself to be carried by the soothing waves of sound.
My last point is my most important point.
**Thoughts Are Not the Enemy**
This is one of the most freeing things to remember when you’re in a sound bath. Much like meditation, there’s often a misconception that to truly relax, our minds must be completely clear and empty, free from all thoughts. But the reality is, thoughts will come—and that’s perfectly okay. If your mind drifts to your to-do list, tomorrow’s plans, or even what’s for dinner, don’t worry; that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
Think of the sound as your anchor, like an external mantra you can gently return to each time your thoughts wander. Imagine your sound bath as a dinner party where your thoughts are your invited guests, each one stopping by for a moment. And the sound? That’s your guest of honor. You can greet your thoughts, acknowledge them, but then return your focus to the sound—the centerpiece of your experience.
So, don’t resist your thoughts or try to push them away. Allow them to come and go, and simply float back to the sound whenever you’re ready. This gentle approach lets you be present with both your thoughts and the sound, creating a balanced, more forgiving experience where peace and presence naturally unfold.
In conclusion, a sound bath is like a shortcut to a more peaceful, balanced mind—a “cheat guide” to cultivating a calm, centered state. For anyone looking to regulate their nervous system and emerge feeling deeply relaxed, renewed, and refreshed, sound baths are a powerful tool. They effortlessly guide you into a meditative state, where you can release stress and reconnect with your inner calm.
Booking a sound bath is one of the most effective ways to enhance your meditation practice and infuse a little more zen into your daily life. Step into the soothing world of sound, and let each session bring you closer to the peace and clarity you deserve.
